Preparing for independence

For most young adults, this stage of life is typically focused on developing independent living skills. This is a critical phase of development for all young people, but is especially critical for those with developmental disabilities or other conditions that interfere with daily living as they prepare to navigate life as independently as possible.

Based on each individual’s level of functioning and their development, treatment emphasizes developing skills needed to improve the quality of work, home, and social life. Specific goals focus on job skills, adaptive and life skills, or any specific social and/or communication skills that are missing but necessary to help young adults achieve a greater level of independence.
